Capturing Rhythm: Braless
Music has a way of bringing people together, and there’s something uniquely exciting about capturing the essence of Braless, a six-piece band made up mostly of college students from UNC. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph Braless during their live show on April 27th at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC, and in a quick pre-show portrait session.
The Portrait Session
Before the show, a brief portrait session was held outside the venue. Despite the short 15 minutes, the goal was to capture the band's dynamic personalities and shared passion for music.
Each member brought their own flair: Izze, the lively drummer; Sarah, the main vocalist with an incredible voice; Samuel on bass; Deana (De) with her soulful saxophone; Gabe, filling in on guitar; and Will, the alternate vocalist and guitarist.
The natural light and casual setting created a series of candid and film-like shots that highlighted their creativity and connection.
The Live Show
As the evening set in, excitement built for Braless’s performance at Cat's Cradle. The venue, known for its intimate and vibrant atmosphere, was perfect for capturing the raw energy of a live show. The Back Room was packed out for their set & dwindled shortly after, to mingle with the band outside.
Relying solely on the venue lighting, the band was captured in their element. Izze’s dynamic drumming, Sarah’s powerful vocals, Samuel’s intense bass lines, De’s saxophone melodies, Gabe’s guitar riffs, and Will’s dual role as vocalist and guitarist—all were moments that told the story of their incredible talent on display that night.
